GIFTED HANDS

This is an excellent movie. It should be shown in all public high schools in Freshman Year to encourage the students to strive for excellence. The story is about a black Ben Carson who overcame adversary and grew up to be a world-famous neurosurgeon and changed this entire field of medicine!

Gifted Hands is based on the true story of Dr. Ben Carson who overcame adversity to become a world-renown neurosurgeon at John Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. John Hopkins is one of the premier hospitals in the world. Dr. Ben Carlson has been so successful as to be credited with changing this field of medicine forever.

Staring Oscar (1996) winning Cuba Goodings, Jr as Ben Carlson. Young "Bennie" did not have much of a chance, growing up in a broken home amongst poverty and prejudice; his grades suffered and Bennie had a temper. And yet his mother never lost her faith in him, insisting Bennie and his brother pursue the opportunities that she never had. His mother helped Bennie grow his imagination and his intelligence but most importantly she encouraged him to pursue his dreams and not to give up. His mother restricted their TV time and made them read books and write a book review on the books that they read.

His mother gave him the courage and his faith helped him believe and his God-given talents which he finally realized and developed, gave him the power to save and change lives through his brilliance and creativity. Ben Carson was fortunate to have a good mother and he married a good wife.

There are several life-changing scenes in the movie:

  • When his mother forces her sons to read books and stop watching so much junk TV which becomes the major turning point in his life!
  • When is recognizes that he can learn and be smart.
  • When he sees that people will think he is smart and respect him when he knows stuff.
  • When he discovers science through the encouragement of a science teacher.
  • When he experiences prejudice in his life and then when he experiences jealously when he does well.
  • When he realizes that he has excellent hand-eye coordination - a gift given to him by the Lord.
  • the one I liked the best is where Ben Carson asks the Lord to help him get rid of his anger!

Also staring Kimberly Elise (mother), Aunjanue Ellis (wife), Gus Hoffman (teenager Ben Carlson) and Jaishon Fisher(young Ben Carl
